Mission and Statement

The faculty and staff of the Department of Pharmacodynamics and Pharmacokinetics (Dept. Pharmacology) extend our sincere welcome and invite you to visit and explore our Department. Foreign (international) students may study either in the English or the Hungarian program in the Department of Pharmacology, School of Pharmacy. English and Hungarian programs are pharmacology programs, and the English curriculum parallels that of the Hungarian program. The requirements of Pharmacology are very complex, and basic areas of sciences including anatomy, biology, physiology, biochremistry and chemistry are rigorously taught.

Our staff includes internationally-renowned scientists who have made major contributions to the understanding and teaching of fundamental mechanisms of many diseases and pharmacotherapy. The Department of Pharmacology is particularly strong in this area; and students interested in basic research are encouraged to participate in our ongoing projects. Following graduation, outstanding students may continue their education by joining one of the ongoing research projects being conducted by both clinical and/or basic science departments. Successful completion of research work will lead to the awarding of a Ph.D. degree. The goal of the Department is to provide state-of-the-art basic medical and scientific education to meet the challenges of the 21st century. As understanding of the molecular-biological basis of diseases, drug design has become progressively driven by consideration of how specific biochemical interactions may be modulated to achieve therapeutic endpoints. Of particular interest in this respect, is identification of compounds capable of modifying critical ligand-receptor interactions, enzyme activities and other events in cellular signaling pathways that lead to enhancement or inhibition of major symptoms of various diseases. We focus on high-quality training of our both undergraduate and graduate students in basic medicine and health care, while remaining committed to serving as a national and international resource for disease prevention and therapy, and promotion of the highest standards of public health in the European Union.

Pharmacology (from Greek pharmacon, "drug"; and logos, “discipline”) is a scientific discipline; the field encompasses drug composition and properties, interactions, toxicology, therapy, and medical applications and anti-pathogenic capabilities. Pharmacology describes drug interaction within biological systems resulting in functional outcomes designed to prevent or favorably alter prognosis of disease. Pharmacology may be considered a basic medical science in its own right.The Department is also actively involved in development of postgraduate education; and actively contributes to advanced scientific training by Ph.D. candidates and other postgraduate students at the University of Debrecen.

Scientific profile, research interest

The major focus of both basic and clinical research conducted by this Department is in the general area of cardiovascular pharmacology – with particular emphasis devoted to characterization of the mechanisms by which various drugs affect metabolism and toxicogenic in the cardiovascular system. Within the scope of these activities, basic research conducted in this Department, typically is concerned with analysis and toxicities of drugs and plant extracts under both in vivo and in vitro experimental models.

Cooperation partners

This Department further supports economically sustainable, and socially equitable research, outreach and educational goals through its extensive network of international cooperation and public-private partnerships. These collaborations include work with Romanian, Italian, French, and American institutions leading common international grant applications. These efforts have been highly rewarding and have resulted in outstanding success by the Department of Pharmacology and Pharmacodynamics in obtaining grant funding support at the national level in basic sciences.
