Research - Department of Industrial Pharmaceutical Technology

Research

The research and development activities of the Department of Industrial Pharmaceutical Technology focus on industrial pharmaceutical technology, the development of advanced formulations and dosage forms, and research into innovative pharmaceutical manufacturing technologies. Our research aims to develop novel pharmaceutical technology solutions, further develop and optimize existing technologies, and investigate complex technological systems capable of addressing future needs in pharmaceutical product development and manufacturing.

One of the key areas of our research activities is formulation development. Within this field, we develop novel and advanced dosage forms, as well as nano-, micro-, and macroscopic drug delivery systems, using various active pharmaceutical ingredients and excipients. We investigate the effects of formulation composition, active pharmaceutical ingredient–excipient interactions, and technological parameters on the properties of pharmaceutical products. Particular emphasis is placed on improving the solubility, release, stability, bioavailability, and other critical quality attributes of active pharmaceutical ingredients.

The Department’s research also encompasses the development and optimization of pharmaceutical manufacturing processes. This includes the investigation of various processing and manufacturing technologies, the development of novel technological solutions, and the exploration of relationships between process parameters and product quality. Research activities may range from laboratory-scale studies to pilot-scale process development, with particular emphasis on scale-up, reproducibility, and industrial applicability.

An important research direction is the integrated development of pharmaceutical formulations and manufacturing technologies. In this context, the Department participates in research projects in which, alongside the development of a specific product or formulation, the design and development of the technological system, equipment, or specialized manufacturing conditions required for its production also form an integral part of the research. This approach enables formulation and pharmaceutical technology considerations to be addressed jointly from the early stages of process and equipment development.

This research direction is well exemplified by the R&D project entitled “Anaerobic Inertized Complex Fluid System for Pilot Batches” (Project ID: 2024-1.1.1-KKV_FÓKUSZ-2024-00003), implemented by SENTIMENTO Kft. with support from the 2024-1.1.1-KKV_FÓKUSZ programme. The project is aimed at developing a complex fluid-based technological system capable of producing pilot batches under anaerobic, inertized conditions. The project clearly illustrates the Department’s research approach, in which pharmaceutical manufacturing processes, formulation-related challenges, specialized technological conditions, and equipment development are addressed as interconnected areas of research.

Accordingly, in addition to classical formulation research, the Department’s R&D activities increasingly focus on complex technological developments involving the design and investigation of novel manufacturing processes, specialized technological systems, pilot-scale equipment, and individual components thereof. These activities may include, among others, controlled-atmosphere systems, fluid-based technological solutions, drying, mixing, and dosing processes, particle engineering technologies, as well as the development of customized technological solutions for the manufacture of pharmaceutical products.

A key component of our research activities is the comprehensive analytical and instrumental characterization of the formulations and technologies developed. Our advanced analytical infrastructure enables the investigation of particle size, the physical and morphological properties of particles, active pharmaceutical ingredient content, structural and solid-state characteristics, as well as the stability and drug-release behavior of formulations. Analytical results provide the basis for the development, comparison, and optimization of formulations and technological processes.

Accordingly, the Department’s research and development activities extend from the investigation of active pharmaceutical ingredients and excipients through formulation development, dosage-form design, and process development to the research of pilot-scale processes and complex technological systems. Our objective is to develop scientifically sound and industrially relevant pharmaceutical technology solutions that can contribute to the advancement of modern dosage forms, manufacturing technologies, and pharmaceutical technological systems.
