History of the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry
The history of the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry at the University of Debrecen is closely intertwined with a decades-long tradition of pharmaceutical education, as well as antibiotic, carbohydrate, and medicinal chemistry research in Debrecen.
The department was founded in 1996 within the framework of the HAS Research Group for Antibiotic Chemistry operating at the Faculty of Science of the Lajos Kossuth University (KLTE), under the name KLTE–MTA Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry. Its first head of department was Prof. Dr. Ferenc Sztaricskai, an internationally recognized figure in antibiotic chemistry research, who played a decisive role in founding the department and shaping its scientific character. He was succeeded as head of department by Prof. Dr. Pál Herczegh, whose decades-long research and teaching work in organic and medicinal chemistry are deeply tied to the department's history.
The establishment of the department was driven by the launch of pharmaceutical education in Debrecen in 1996. In 2003, with the establishment of the Faculty of Pharmacy at the University of Debrecen, the department became one of the independent departments of the new faculty, operating as a key educational and scientific center of the Faculty. Currently, under the leadership of Professor Dr. Anikó Borbás, an internationally recognized researcher in carbohydrate chemistry, the department combines decades of Debrecen’s medicinal chemistry traditions with modern research directions, international professional relationships, and high-quality pharmaceutical education.
