The dominant research area of the department is the investigation of the pathomechanism and pharmacological influenceability of cardiovascular diseases. Within this, there are two independent research domains.
RESEARCH DOMAIN
Cardioprotection and cell adaptation
István Lekli | ischemia and reperfusion | mitochondria | oxidative stress | autophagy
The workshop studies the molecular processes of myocardial damage and cell protection. It investigates ischemic reperfusion injury, as well as heart failure, mitochondrial function, oxidative stress and autophagy in cellular and experimental models. The group studies the cardioprotective effects of natural and synthetic compounds. The workshop also participates in the biological evaluation of drug technology developments, primarily through pharmacokinetic and other in vivo studies.

RESEARCH DOMAIN
Cardiovascular pharmacology
Árpád Tósaki | cardiovascular pathologies | pharmacological interventions
The workshop investigates the pathophysiological mechanisms and drug influence of cardiovascular diseases. His research ranges from the analysis of ischemic damage, reperfusion, arrhythmias and cell-protective signaling processes to the evaluation of possible cardioprotective interventions. The workshop is related to the pharmacological cooperation between HUN-REN and the University of Debrecen.

HUN-REN-DE Pharmamodul Research Group
Árpád Tósaki | prevention and medication | pharmacology | cardiac ischemia-reperfusion | arrhythmia | necrosis | apoptosis | autophagy | tumors | melanoma cell lines
The Research Group’s scientific interest for the past more than four decades has been the research of the mechanisms of cardiovascular diseases using animal models (R and D activities), which are of fundamental importance from the point of view of drug development and innovation. If myocardial damage can be influenced in the right direction by drug treatments, further pathological and signal transduction processes can be prevented and the physiological functions of the heart can be restored to a certain extent. The main research interests are the study of the processes of ischemia/reperfusion caused arrhythmias, sudden death, heart failure and tissue necrosis, including the possibilities of pharmacological prevention of necrosis, apoptosis and autophagy cell damage. Within the scope of the currently ongoing funded HUN-REN-TKI DE project (2022-2027), the research includes the chemical modification of the basic structure of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) releasing products and other drugs already used in medicine (e.g., non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, vitamin C); the significance and investigation of their effects in the damaged (diseased) myocardium, and in tumor therapy. The research area also focuses on the mechanisms of necrotic, apoptotic and autophagy cell death, the importance of signal transduction processes and their prevention by drug means (prevention).

Instrumental and bioanalytics
István Bak | oxidative stress | antioxidants | metabolism | instrumental analysis
The workshop deals with the influence of oxidative stress and related pathological processes, as well as the modelling of drug metabolism. In addition, it participates in the pharmacokinetic studies of newly formulated formulations, and in the related method development of the application of various sample preparation techniques for instrumental analytical determinations.
